Memex Article Commentary: Top Three Technologies to Tame the Big Data Beast

       I found an article on the Huffington Post from November 2011, about technologies needed to tame Big Data that are derived from Bush's concept of the "memex".
       The first technology is semantic technology, "which loosely implements the concept of associative indexing."  The article provides the example of Siri as a good step towards taming Big Data because users can get the information they want whenever they want it. Siri is able to index a wide variety of information and imitate the ways humans think. 
       The second technology is the Cloud. "Bush's "memex" consisted of a desk-based mechanism that was capable of recording all data and providing speedy search results." The Cloud provides a way to store the data that is growing at increasing rates. 
       The third technology is Natural Language Processing, which is used to "harvest trusted, structured data from the rapidly expanding corpus of unstructured emails, logs, and other documents."

       I thought this article was interesting because a concept that was created back in 1945 is still inspiring technologies of today. I think the author of this article was pretty accurate in their choice of the three technologies to tame Big Data, because they do encompass all the different aspects that the "memex" offered, such as private files and library, and ways communication. I think that the "memex" will continue to inspire technologies of the future and it will be interesting to see where the technologies in society will take us next.
